A bi-monthly online journal providing news and background about activities undertaken by STA with a view to improving the methods, technologies and standards associated to transportation infrastructures.

STA represented at Intertraffic Amsterdam 2022

Four STA membership organisations attended the event & exhibited their solutions and expertise.

Road Steel Engineering (Gonvarri Industries), Heintzmann Group, CSI and Transpolis represented the Smart Transportation Alliance at the 4-day landmark event held in Amsterdam from 27 March to 01 April 2022.

STA presents SCALE-UP at Go Mobility 2022

The event was been larger and more international than ever before with over 105 exhibitors.

STA presented the objectives, research methodology, pilots and first ongoing activities of the 4-year SCALE-UP Project on urban mobility at last weeks’ GoMobility Expo in Irún, Spain. Apart from a range of different research & innovation actions and projects, the majority of exhibitors were commercial companies and also some public authorities and research institutes.

This years’ edition of the event was significantly larger than in previous years and the focus of the Expo has clearly shifted from a regional event to an international event of larger scope. Entry was free of charge to encourage a diverse mix of visitors to attend.

STA becomes again collaborating organisation of the Smart City Expo World Congress 2022

The collaborative agreement has been renewed for another edition of the event, taking place on 15-17 November 2022 in Barcelona, Spain.

Smart City Expo World Congress gathers leaders from the most innovative companies, governments and organizations to move cities towards a better future.

The annual event represents a major platform to exchange ideas between private companies, public authorities and research bodies. STA members are eligible to entry tickets for free and exhibition booths to reduced fees.

European Commission announces new EU Mission Cities

100 European cities have been selected to participate in the Mission for climate-neutral and smart cities by 2030.

Cities act as experimentation and innovation ecosystems to help all others in their transition to become climate-neutral by 2050.The Cities Mission will receive €360 million of Horizon Europe funding covering the period 2022-23, to start the innovation paths towards climate neutrality by 2030. The research and innovation actions will address clean mobility, energy efficiency and green urban planning, and offer the possibility to build joint initiatives and ramp up collaborations in synergies with other EU programmes.

 

How China’s Belt and Road Initiative is faring

The bold vision of China’s 2013 Belt and Road Initiative has become China’s most important global economic and foreign policy instrument.

The geographical scale has expanded to more than 140 countries, including in Africa, the Middle East, South Asia and Latin America. At the same time, the BRI has also expanded its ambitions with the introduction of a Digital Silk Road, a Polar Silk Road, a Health Silk Road and a 5G-based Internet-of-Things (IoT) project.All transport infrastructure generates carbon emissions in its construction, maintenance and operation. This hidden carbon cost, known as embodied emissions, can be significant. This study quantifies the embodied emissions involved in building and maintaining typical transport infrastructure.

 

Subsurface Drainage Practices in Pavement Design, Construction, and Maintenance

Subsurface drainage is an important factor affecting pavement performance and preservation of public investment.

The TRB National Cooperative Highway Research Program published a report on Subsurface Drainage Practices in Pavement Design, Construction, and Maintenance documents the current state of practice by departments of transportation (DOTs) for subsurface drainage, which is not always considered as a critical component when it comes to design, construction, and maintenance of pavement.
