IN MEMORIAM: PROFESSOR JOSÉ MANUEL MENÉNDEZ, ESTEEMED STA LEADER

STA is deeply saddened to share the passing of a highly respected STA leader, José Manuel Menéndez, Professor at the School of Telecommunication Engineering (ETSIT) of the Technical University of Madrid (UPM) and Director of the RTVE-UPM Chair since its creation in 2015. Since the founding of STA in 2015, he had been one of its most active and committed representatives, always supporting the association’s mission and community.

Prof. Menéndez served as Director of the Visual Telecommunications Application Group (GATV) from its inception in 2004 until 2019. He was deeply committed to fostering European cooperation and had extensive experience leading and participating in more than 200 research projects, both national and European, focused on visual communications, digital television, and computer vision.

He published over two hundred papers on these subjects in international journals and conferences, contributed to the creation of two technology-based companies, and collaborated in the launch of three others within the Information and Communications Technology sector.

Beyond his professional, academic, and research achievements, Prof. Menéndez will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, and remarkable human values.
