STA JOINS HIGH-LEVEL EVENT EXPLORING AI APPLICATIONS TO TRANSPORT INFRASTRUCTURES

On 1 July 2025, the Smart Transportation Alliance (STA) reaffirmed its commitment and expertise in applying Artificial Intelligence (AI) to transport infrastructure during the event “Artificial Intelligence Applied to Transport – Current Situation, Expectations, and Challenges”, organised by the Transport and Digital Society Committees of the Spanish Institute of Engineering (IIE).
STA was represented by its President, Dr José F. Papí, who moderated the panel session titled "Applications of AI in Transport and Infrastructure".
The panel brought together experts from the industry who shared their insights with the audience, who actively participated in person and also online.

The panel initiated very interesting conversations, highlighting practical implementations of the different ways digitalisation and the application of new AI tools in areas such as traffic management, road safety, and infrastructure maintenance. Also, the need for collaboration between public institutions, academia, and private industry was mentioned.
This year, STA's activities are centred on the application of AI in transport infrastructures, fully aligned with the most current trends in transport innovation.
In June 2025, STA released a Technical Report (TR 2/2025), authored by one of the panelists, Mr Jorge Alfonso Kurano, titled “AI Applications across the Road Infrastructure Lifecycle”. The report presents a holistic and comprehensive overview of how AI solutions can be integrated across all phases of transport infrastructures.
On 17 September 2025, the 2025 STA Annual Conference & Innovation Awards will explore new and existing policies, solutions, and strategies that result in a new generation of safer and more sustainable transport infrastructures that leverage the most recent advancements in the fields of Artificial Intelligence and Big Data.
The 2025 STA Annual Conference & Innovation Awards will take place on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, from 11:00 to 13:30 CET in Antwerp, Belgium, within the European Transport Conference 2025. Registration is now open (admission upon registration to the offical European Transport Conference).
